Happy National Disability Employment Awareness Month! Each October, we honor and celebrate the contributions of our nation’s workers with disabilities and the inclusive employment practices that benefit employers and employees.
Since 1985, Lifeworks has supported thousands of Minnesotans with disabilities to connect to experiences that explore their interests, develop skills, and start or advance their careers. We proudly partner with individuals to learn what kind of employment fits their needs and goals. Lifeworks is steadfast in our belief that all people who want to work should be able to access competitive, integrated employment.
Like Maryann, who is blossoming at her first independent job placement at an assisted living community after years of working at contracted work sites. Maryann was recently awarded Employee of the Month, recognizing her for her hard work, dedication, and empathy towards residents and staff.
And Jessica, who has found success working as an online English tutor. This non-traditional job aligns her passion for languages with a flexible schedule that allows her to do other things she values, like volunteering, reading, and learning new languages.
And like Raymond, who has worked at Home Depot for four years and pursued an internal promotion independently. He earned the new role and has been an Appliance Specialist for over two months, taking part in direct sales with customers looking for new appliances, countertops, and cabinets.
In addition to highlighting the success of workers with disabilities, Lifeworks also takes National Disability Employment Awareness Month as an opportunity to encourage employers to reflect on how inclusive their workplaces and hiring practices are. People with disabilities still face significant barriers to employment, and it is our responsibility – as employers and neighbors – to ensure we are creating radically inclusive places and spaces.
