WHO WE ARE
Champions of change for all people with disabilities
Partnering with People with Disabilities for 60 years
Lifeworks was founded in 1965 through the spirit of innovation. Seven families established a program in effort to keep their children with disabilities at home rather than send them to institutions. From grassroots beginnings, Lifeworks has evolved alongside people with disabilities and their families across Minnesota, supporting over 3,000 people annually. Together, we reimagine what’s possible through innovative solutions for careers, daily activities, community engagement, and in-home services. We collaborate with employers, communities, and government agencies to co-create expanded opportunities that build more accessible, equitable, and diverse communities.
Mission
To be the partner of choice in advancing disability inclusion.
Vision
We envision a world where disability inclusion is the standard.
Our Core Values
Values tell us what’s important. They are the foundation of who we are and how we work together. At Lifeworks, our values are also the pillars to our culture. They are part of everything we do and define the expectations we have for ourselves and each other. We stand by these principles. They guide our decision making and how we carry out our mission. As Lifeworks core beliefs, our values set us apart and are the blueprint for our success.
Our Equity Statement
Lifeworks strives to be radically accessible, diverse, equitable, and inclusive. We appreciate the vibrancy of differences, center the voices of silenced and marginalized people, and champion universal rights.
What We Stand For
Disability Inclusion
Everything we do at Lifeworks – from core services to trainings and consulting to advocacy – is through the lens of advancing disability inclusion.
Innovation
We work within the existing support systems to provide the best possible services for people with disabilities, while working to influence and change a system not designed alongside people with disabilities
Excellence
We believe that people deserve the best. We hold ourselves accountable to providing world-class support and services.
60 Years of Disability Inclusion
From our humble beginnings in Dakota County supporting eight children with disabilities to the more than 3,000 people with disabilities we partner with today, Lifeworks has made a steadfast commitment to quality care and innovative programs for people with disabilities in our community for 60 years.
As the years have gone by, Lifeworks has evolved from a small grassroots organization to the highly impactful nonprofit it is today.
-
1960s
In the 1960s, parents faced limited options for children with developmental disabilities. A grassroots movement by seven Dakota County, Minnesota families led to the establishment of a day program for children in 1965, eventually becoming Lifeworks Services. The organization was officially incorporated in 1966 as Dakota County Day Activities Center, Inc.
-
1970s
The 1970s were transformative for Lifeworks, marked by three executive director appointments, leadership changes, and the expansion to serve adults. The organization also initiated an early intervention program and hired Judy Lysne as a teacher, who would play a crucial role in Lifeworks’ future until 2017.
-
1980s
The 1980s were pivotal for Lifeworks, marked by two name changes, year-round service for individuals, and expansion into Hennepin County. The organization developed expertise in supported employment and launched “Project Dakota,” establishing the largest early intervention program in Minnesota before transitioning children to school districts.
-
1990s
The 1990s brought stability and growth to Lifeworks, which adopted a values-based decision-making model to guide ethical and respectful choices. During this decade, a new leadership model emerged, culminating in the organization’s final name change to Lifeworks Services, Inc., and continued expansion in supported employment.
-
2000s
The 2000s were a period of expansion for Lifeworks, launching services in the Mankato area in response to request from families, case managers, and school staff. Lifeworks also began providing Fiscal Support services, aligning with a growing trend toward self-direction for individuals and families.
-
2010s
Since 2010, Lifeworks has expanded its reach by building its first owned program location in Apple Valley and celebrated 50 years of dedicated service to the community. This milestone reflects Lifeworks’ commitment to providing quality care and innovative programs for individuals with disabilities as they thrive together.
-
2020s
In the 2020s, Lifeworks has focused on advancing disability inclusion through innovative programs, expanding service offerings, and enhancing community engagement.
